Integrated property predictions during casting and heat treatment of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys by precipitation simulation

Abstract The production and manufacture of aluminium castings typically involves multiple heat treatment process steps. Simulation tools are very useful to help predict the evolution mechanical properties, improve parameters as a guideline for casting design. In this study, kinetic model, based on Nucleation Growth Theory (CNGT), was developed implemented modelling in simulation tool. Starting from information generated solidification cooling casting, carried out further precipitation behaviour Cu or Mg-Si -containing phases during solution treatment, quenching, artificial ageing processes Al alloys. Model validation within research cluster “Advance Metals Processes” Aachen, Germany. Heat treatments were performed two different Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys with quench methods at temperatures. Experimental investigations including atom probe, wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, tensile tests conducted calibrate validate model. simulations showed good agreement studied conditions promising approach integrated industrial applications.
